A strong home performance from the blues

Ilminster welcomed Sherborne to the Archie Gooch Pavilion for the first time on Sunday. Ilminster were looking for three points to take them above Sherborne and into second spot, before a little break from league action next week due to their FA Cup tie.

Ilminster started the brighter of the two teams and created several opportunities; and around the 25minute mark a Colette Martin strike rattled the cross bar. Straight from this, a big kick from the Sherborne keeper bounced between Ilminster's defence and keeper and following a coming together the ball fell kindly for the Sherborne forward to finish.

This spurred Ilminster on, who could find themselves unlucky to be behind. Five minutes later a brilliant cross-field ball from Sian Chapman found Abi Meyer, who took a touch in her path and fired home from 18 yards past the Sherborne keeper.

Ilminster carried on putting on pressure with more good work from Chapman; who's cross into the box was cleared to Charlie Pettinger around 25 yards out. With a chest down and on the half volley; she hit an unstoppable volley into the top corner - goal of the season contender.

Ilminster weren’t finished for the half and when a ball into the box was only cleared to the edge of the box, it was Pettinger there again to fire home past the Sherborne keeper.

Half time 3-1 Ilminster.

The half time lead gave Ilminster a nice cushion and half time instructions to carry on the first half performance. Although Ilminster were quite comfortable, the next goal of the game was still going to be important.

With around 30 minutes of the second half gone, Ilminster did kill the game off when good work from full-back Dana Andrews led to her crossing into the box; and the with slightest of touches by Harrie Kelly the ball fell to the impressive Sian Chapman to fire home in the 6yard box.

Ilminster saw the game out with some controlled football and the experience of taking three points off of a good Sherborne side is a big boost for Ilminster going into their next league game against top of the table St Austell.

Final Score 4-1 Ilminster.
