Top of the table clash ends in stalemate

Wasteful Ilminster took a share of the points in this first against second fixture; with Georgia Mann, Hannah Billing and Sian Chapman returning to the squad, alongside Colette Martin who was only fit enough for the bench. Ilminster were set up back to a familiar formation following some changes the week before in the FA Cup.

The game started brightly and Ilminster found a couple of early openings that really should have been finished. Ilminster then went behind when a free kick delivered from near the corner was met by a powerful header from a St Austell forward.

Ilminster missed a glorious chance around the 20 minute mark when a Maisie Parker corner bounced twice across the 6 yard box, which no Ilminster player gambled on to tap home. Town did however get themselves back on level terms a couple minutes later when an Abi Meyer free kick was met by Jodi Cornwall to head home.

HALF TIME Ilminster 1 – 1 St Austell

The second half started similar to the first with a few chances for either side, but it was Ilminster that took the lead though when a Charlotte Johnson kick was helped on by Sian Chapman and Jodi Cornwall raced through and emphatically blasted home from the corner of the box, a cracking goal.

Ilminster however were beaten with a ball over the top and even though the defence did well to recover, the ball fell for the St Austell forward whose shot looped over CJ and into the Ilminster net.

There was then a long delay in the game when a St Austell forward landed awkwardly trying to block a clearance.

When the game restarted it was cautious from both teams, the players seemed a little shocked from the injury. When the tempo picked up again it was St Austell who got back in front when the their forward broke away and a great save from CJ saw the ball ricochet back off the forward and into the net.

Ilminster were not done and with 15 minutes still left to play, a good run from Ilminster number 10 Sian Chapman saw her burst forward and play a ball across the box for Cornwall to tap home for her hat-trick.

And this was how the game ended, Ilminster were good in stages but a lack concentration at the back and in attacking positions saw St Austell make the journey back to Cornwall with a well deserved point.

Final Score 3-3

Player of the Match for Ilminster was Jodi Cornwall, who’s three goals capped a very good display from the Ilminster winger.
