Torquay put Four past a valiant Town

Sunday the 15th of October saw Ilminster travel to Ipplepen to take on a strong Torquay side. Ilminster took a squad of 12, Hannah Billing coming back into the team for her second appearance of the season.

The match started very evenly, with neither team being able to create any clear-cut opportunities, Torquay enjoyed more of the ball in the opening stages but Ilminster managed to keep the threats at bay.

It took until the 29th minute for the first goal of the game which went against Ilminster. A corner came in from the left-hand side, causing a goal mouth scramble where the ball was struck 5 times towards the Ilminster goal, some good saves from Charlotte Johnson in goal mixed with a couple Ilminster legs, but the ball somehow found its way to a Torquay player who in space finished well from 6 yards. Ilminster trail 1-0.

Unfortunately, Ilminster couldn’t create any real chances, and found themselves 2-0 down by the end of the half. Another corner came in from the left-hand side a good punch clear by the Town keeper saw the ball fall to the unmarked Torquay number 8 who brought the ball down well to fire a strike straight into the top left corner, nothing could be done to stop this one!

The second half saw much of the same, both teams having the ball but very few clear cut chances being created throughout. But Torquay added another goal to their tally in the first 2 minutes of the second half. A foul was given away on the edge of the box in shooting range for the Torquay number 10, who got the ball up over the wall and just under the cross bar even the strong hand from the Town keeper couldn’t keep this one out, a very good free kick!

Ilminster looked most likely to score through the long direct kicks over the top from CJ in goal, seeing young striker Shannon Crouch nearly get in behind on some of them, but nothing quite came for them.

Town did however let one more goal past them this afternoon. A misskick from the Town keeper saw the ball fall kindly for a Torquay attacker who got to the loose ball well and struck home into the empty net 18 yards from the goal. This is how the match finished, plenty of positives to be taken from this performance from Town, in which the squad depth and quality for Torquay showed.

Man of the match for this game was Maisie Poole.

Towns next match is Sunday the 22nd October where they play host to Marine Academy Plymouth, 14:00 kick off at the Archie Gooch Pavilion.
