Knowing the last time we played Thorncombe we were on the end of 7-0 stuffing we knew we had to up our game.
The pre match talk from the gaffer emphasised the need for us to up our game and play more as a team.
We started the game very well and Thorncombe were a bit taken back as we were playing some solid football and Thorncombe could not handle the formation we had set up.
The whole team were playing really well and you would not think that we had lost the previous game 7-0.
Thorncombe now started to create a few chances but were denied by some great goal keeping from Steve Garland and some excellent defending from our back four. Our central midfield of Stu Lee, Tommy Wallis and Tommy Bond were playing really well not letting the Thorncombe midfield have too much time on the ball.
We went close to scoring just before half time after a cross from wide right was cleared by the Thorncombe defence and fell to Stu Lee who narrowly put the ball wide.
Half Time Ilminster Colt’s 0 – 0 Thorncombe
The half time talk consisted of keep going as we are and we have a chance of the three points.
The second half continued like the first with both teams not really letting the other team have a clear chance on goal.
Deep into the second half the gaffer made a change as Richie Wilmot made way for Dan Horgan who has returned to the colt’s set up.
With only ten minutes to go it looked like the game was heading for a draw and before the game the colts would happily have taken a point.
With only a minute left of the game the colts had given away a free kick just inside their own half. A long ball was played into the Colts box and Steve Garland Jumped and claimed the ball but as he caught the ball he was clattered by two Thorncombe attackers and this resulted in him dropping the ball and a Thorncombe player slotted the ball home to get them the win.
The colts felt really hard done by as the goal should not have stood and we should have been awarded a free kick but that’s football and we lost the game with the last kick off the ball.
The colts deserved at least a draw from the game and it showed that a bit more commitment from the team and we can compete with the better teams in our league.
