Colts stay focused to beat league strugglers

After a long break over Christmas and against a side hungry for points and battling for survival in the league we knew that the game was not going to be won with ease. Ilminster made a positive start with some good play along the left hand side of the park to put Chris nezianya in a decent scoring position. After beating his man, nezzy struck one just over the bar with some pace behind the ball .

Shortly after a great ball in from the left across the face of goal fell kindly for newly elected manager tommy wallis who placed the ball just wide with a first time effort. Another attempt fell to nezianya which was tipped just over the bar , a close headed effort at goal from the corner wasn't enough to beat the south petherton keeper either. Persistence paid off though when nezianya again through on goal , neatly put the ball in the back of the net.

Ilminster fought well for the first half and looked comfortable to go in at half time with the lead.

Half time 1-0

The objective for the second half was made clear during the half time interval , making an early goal in the second half to put the game to bed the intention.

Almost straight from kick off, some great link up play was shown again by the home side and with a bursting run down the left hand side , Jo draper skipped past his man to deliver a devastating cross that the away side found too hard to deal with by putting the ball past their own keeper. At 2-0 the side now looked comfortable and with the hill in ilminsters favour , the side kept on pressing .A good display from Adam whaites and lance joselyn saw south petherton struggle to control the midfield.

another attack attempt went out for a corner but this time it was made good use of as the ball fell to nezianya at the near post for him to slot the ball from close range past the defence.

Dariusz zack came on for Tommy Wallis and put in a good shift , quickly becoming a fans favourite with his work rate .

At 3-0 it looked like the colts were going to make it more as chances went begging.Chris rawle came close towards the end of the game but couldn't find the net which earnt him donkey of the day for the second time out.Lance joselyn looked like scoring from 10 yards out from a good position but was unlucky as his shot rattled the crossbar.

Nezianya then made way for Tom callow to go in up front .It seemed like everyone in the side wanted a goal in the final ten minutes as players seemed to be pushing on a bit high and dropping out of position . With the colts trying to play a little too much through the middle and not utilising the spaces out wide, ilminster found themselves getting caught out in their slightly jaded shape ,defending the counter attack more frequently than before. South petherton couldn't find the right passes to profit from it and although they were battling on right up until full time , some good goal keeping from Steve garland and collectively calm defending from the side saw the team see the game out at 3-0.

A good performance from the team as a whole and a great clean sheet and 3 points sees the side earning their first win of the season.

MOM -Chris nezianya
